At Parabellum, we believe that accuracy isn’t just a skill—it’s a discipline. Whether you're a first-time shooter, a seasoned competitor, or a tactical professional, mastering your marksmanship takes practice, precision, and the right training.
If you want to shoot faster, hit smaller targets, and develop rock-solid consistency, these five essential drills will help you hone your technique and take your shooting to the next level.
Ready to level up? Let’s dive in.
1. Dry-Fire Practice – Train Without Burning Ammo
✅ Why It’s Important: Perfecting your trigger press, sight alignment, and grip without firing a shot saves ammo and builds muscle memory.
🔥 How to Do It:
Unload your firearm completely and double-check that it’s safe.
Aim at a small target on the wall.
Press the trigger smoothly while keeping sights perfectly aligned.
Watch for any movement or “flinch” as you pull the trigger.
🎯 Parabellum Pro Tip: Use a laser training system or a snap cap for instant feedback on your dry-fire sessions.
2. The Bill Drill – Speed & Accuracy Under Pressure
✅ Why It’s Important: The Bill Drill builds trigger speed, recoil control, and sight recovery, all essential for defensive and competitive shooting.
🔥 How to Do It:
Start 7 yards from a full-size silhouette target.
From the holster or low-ready, fire six shots as fast as possible while keeping all hits inside the A-zone.
Focus on controlling recoil and resetting your sight picture quickly.
Goal: Keep all rounds on target in under 3 seconds.
🎯 Parabellum Pro Tip: We use the Bill Drill in our Defensive Pistol and Speed Shooting courses—come train with us!
3. The Mozambique Drill – Fast & Effective Shot Placement
✅ Why It’s Important: Also known as the "Failure Drill," this drill trains for real-world engagements, emphasizing quick and accurate shot placement.
🔥 How to Do It:
Start 7 yards from a silhouette target.
From holster or low-ready, fire two shots to the chest and one shot to the head.
Work on speed, smooth transitions, and recoil control.
Goal: Land all three hits in under 2.5 seconds.
🎯 Parabellum Pro Tip: This drill is a must for self-defense shooters and is a staple of our Defensive Pistol and 2-Gun Training programs.
4. Transition Training – Mastering Multiple Targets
✅ Why It’s Important: In competition, self-defense, and tactical shooting, engaging multiple targets efficiently is a must. This drill teaches you to track, transition, and fire smoothly without jerky movements.
🔥 How to Do It:
Set up three targets at varying distances and angles.
Fire one shot per target in a left-to-right or right-to-left pattern.
Focus on smooth transitions, not just speed—don’t rush your sights!
Goal: Maintain accuracy while increasing speed over time.
🎯 Parabellum Pro Tip: This drill directly improves Steel Challenge, 2-Gun, and defensive shooting skills—train with us for live-fire coaching!
5. Long-Range Precision – 1,000 MOA & 500 KYL Challenges
✅ Why It’s Important: Whether for hunting, competition, or tactical engagements, long-range shooting requires mastering ballistics, wind calls, and trigger discipline.
🔥 How to Do It:
Start at 100 yards and work your way to longer distances.
Use holdovers, wind adjustments, and breathing control to stay on target.
For 1,000 MOA, engage extreme long-range targets with precise elevation adjustments.
In the 500 KYL (Know Your Limits) challenge, shoot progressively smaller targets—but one miss ends your run!
